I'm supporting the independent businesses that give Altofts its unique character
I've been working with local campaigners since 2019 to stop the village becoming just another motorway off-ramp for unsuitable HGVs.
Altofts was my home for nearly ten years - I fought to keep unwelcome development out of the village and I'll make sure that it's not forgotten any more.
I know that Altofts is a place where people are choosing to raise their families, and I sent my son to both Martin Frobisher Infant School and Altofts Junior School.
As a parent, I was hugely disappointed when Altofts Juniors failed its OFSTED inspection last year, and I know how important it is that families in Altofts have access to the kind of services they need to support their family life.
In Altofts, my top priorities will be:
Keeping the character of the village and protecting it from being split up or merged into Normanton by council schemes.
Ensuring that roads throughout the village are safe for everyone - tackling the HGVs accessing the village illegally, speeding near our schools, potholes, and poor signs and markings.
Supporting all of our local schools to provide the best education possible for our children - and doing what I can to help all three Altofts schools gain OUTSTANDING OFSTED ratings.
Ensuring we increase health capacity for the new houses built in Altofts.
Supporting local childminders and nurseries to provide the care that local families need for their children.
Making sure that Wakefield Council keeps their promises to people in Altofts - like the still undelivered country park at Wellbeck.
I don't just stand up for my community for political photo ops. When Altofts was threatened by a huge extension to a local clay quarry, I led the campaign to make sure the professional application produced by expensive expert consultants was defeated - TWICE!
This campaign wasn't about NIMBYism. The project didn't create jobs or opportunities for people in Altofts, but it would have affected every child at Altofts Junior School for their entire school careers, and disrupted the lives of hundreds of local people with dust, dirt and noise.
We produced a dossier of expert evidence, local testimonials and technical planning faults that made a case the council couldn't deny - and then we did it again a year later when they came back to try again!
We were even rewarded for our campaigning efforts with an invitation to 10 Downing Street's "Inspirational Women" reception.
My track record speaks for itself. I won't let Altofts down.
Residents Against Rudd Quarry brought the whole community together - and my neighbours and I were the driving force behind it.
